David Gaines: During Seminary

I first entered Bishop White Seminary in the Fall of 2006 and continued my Gonzaga University Philosophy, Theology, and Music education while there. I graduated from Gonzaga in the spring 2008. I then joined a Fransican community (the Conventural Franciscans) based out of Chicago. I was with them for about a year and a was a wonderful time and I will always have a bit of franciscan spirit in me for sure. Then in December of 2009 I rejoined the Spokane Diocese and worked in two parishes for the next 7 months (St. Francis Xavier and St. Patrick). One of my favorite parts of working at St. Patrick school was recess duty every day from 11am to 1pm. I also enjoyed being able to serve at the daily mass at St. Francis parish and get to know the daily mass crowd...they are such wonderful and holy people. After finishing this assignment I came to Washington, DC in the Fall of 2010 and began my master degree.

Overall seminary is a really wonderful place. Daily mass, common prayer, academics, and the holy men I live with are what make seminary so great. Also I can't be more grateful for the wonderful mentors I've had as my Spiritual Directors, formation advisors, and other really great priests who help me discern God's workings in my life. Finally the wonderful support, encouragement and prayers that I've received from my family, friends, parishoners, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Daughters, Serra Club family sponsors (Thanks Manfred family!), and so many more is what has sustained me in God's grace throughout these years. I know that I can't do this on my own...I know that I CAN do it with all of these wonderful people and all through God's grace.
